Welcome to Barcelona Improv Festival

For the 2021-22 season, we are presenting a series of mini-festivals. Each month, Barcelona will welcome guest teachers and performers and invite our friends from Barcelona and beyond to play, learn, and share.

See below for information on workshops, shows, travel and accommodation, social events, and COVID protocols.

Our December 2021 edition has come to a close. Like us on Facebook to find out how to participate in the next edition, planned for Spring, 2022.

Workshops

All workshops include free admission to both nights of shows!

Saturday, 4 December

X Marks the Spot with Kelly Agathos
Mixer Team Workshop

We've been there- feeling stuck in a an improv scene, having all the good will in the world but just not knowing what to do next. The good news is that we can focus on two simple elements, justification and specificity to get unstuck and fire up our collective inspiration! Just like the 'X' which marks the spot on a treasure map, justification and specificity are a winning combination that can turbocharge your improv skills and inspire you and your partners in new and surprising ways.
Our mixer team performance will be The Hangover. Just like the movie, we will recreate the backstory to an unforgettable evening, using specific details and justification to create the flashbacks of our protagonists' crazy night out as well as their morning after situation all at the same time!

Location: Espai Piluso, C/Salvà 68
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm (with a 1 hour lunch break), check in at 9:45.
Price: 90€ (includes free admission to Jam 3 Dec and Show 4 Dec)

Opinions, Lies, & Misconceptions with Tom Tollenaere
Mixer Team Workshop

Facts are boring; they remove surprise. Telling a story is merely stating facts in an ordered way. But what about things that may not be factual: opinions, suspicions, preconceptions, hunches, lies, misconceptions etc? In this workshop we will learn to offer these as gifts to our co-players. By doing that, we do not merely create a story, we create a sea of possibilities for stories to emerge.

Location: Tinta Roja, C/Creu dels Molers 17
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm (with a 1 hour lunch break), check in at 9:45.
Price: 90€ (includes free admission to Jam 3 Dec and Show 4 Dec)

Mixer Team Workshops culminate in a performance that night
Participants must be vaccinated, recovered from COVID in the last 6 months, or provide a negative COVID-19 test from 3 or 4 December to participate. Masks may be required inside the workshop but not for performances. (Contact us if you need assistance for COVID testing.)

Pay Attention with Noah Levin
Finding Patterns in Play

Use callbacks, reincorporation, and patterns to be brilliant. When an audience member “gets it,” it is a cathartic moment, a surprise, a relief, a laugh. Recognition of a pattern is hard-wired into our human brains and we can use it on stage. Learn techniques to make patterns and use callbacks, tickle those hard to reach right frontal lobes, and delight your audiences.
Location: Centre Civic El Sortidor, Plaça del Sortidor, 12
Time: 11:00am - 2:00pm, check in at 10:45.
Price: 40€ (includes free admission to Jam 3 Dec and Show 4 Dec)

Notice Everything with Kelly Agathos
Focus on what’s already there

During improv shows, our scenes can often suffer from too much going on, or vital cues getting ignored. We’re stressed onstage and we either overcompensate by adding more, or miss the offers our partners make.
How can we keep our brains from going into overdrive and truly stay in the moment? How do we react to what is already there rather than invent new things?
This workshop focuses on exercises to help slow us down, quiet our inner critic, heighten our perceptiveness, and keep us attuned to the rich world that has already started unfolding in our scene. We will create scenes that prove that we are all we need.

Location: Espai Piluso, C/Salvà 68
Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm
Price: 40€ (includes free admission to Jam 3 Dec and Show 4 Dec)

Space as Another Player with Alix Gentil
Visualization and Play

Develop your visualization abilities and turn space into another player. Make scenes and stories move forward thanks to “space coaching,” work from the sides to add missing ingredients, to bring surprising elements, and to set up a genre. This resource will open up a world of possibilities for you as a player and for your team, and make your partners on-stage feel supported and guided.
Location: Centre Civic El Sortidor, Plaça del Sortidor, 12
Time: 11:00am - 2:00pm, check in at 10:45.
Price: 40€ (includes free admission to Jam 3 Dec and Show 4 Dec)

Trains & Tracks with Tom Tollenaere
Scenework Toolkit

Setting up a great improv performance is like setting up a train on a track: Once train & track have been solidly built, the train executes a journey by simply following the track. If you start your train somewhere in the middle of a track, you may not know where the train will end up – but you can ride it to a fulfilling destination. In this workshop we will practice how to initiate scenes to ensure they always lead somewhere.

Location: Tinta Roja, C/Creu dels Molers 17
Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm, check in at 9:45.
Price: 40€ (includes free admission to Jam 3 Dec and Show 4 Dec)
